چکیده

An efficient and flexible parallel version of a Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) solver has been developed to simulate the compressible tip-flow of a rotor in hover. The solver employs an immersed-boundary technique in conjunction with a curvilinear structured grid and the dynamic model is used to model the subgrid scale (SGS) stress terms. The solver also employs a hybrid implicit-explicit time-discretization scheme wherein the diagonal viscous terms are treated implicitly and all other terms including the convective terms and crossterms are treated explicitly using a low-storage 3-order Runge-Kutta scheme. A mixed second-order central-difference-QUICK scheme has been used which allows us to precisely control the numerical damping. Preliminary results from non-rotating tip-flow are presented.

Effects of Different Turbulence Models in Simulation of Unsteady Tip Leakage Flow in Axial Compressor Rotor Blades Row

Characteristics of rotor blade tip clearance flow in axial compressors can significantly affect their performance and stable operation. It may also increase blade vibrations and cause detrimental noises. Therefore, this paper is contributed to investigate tip leakage flow in a low speed isolated axial compressor rotor blades row. Simulations are carried out on near-stall condition, which is val...

Numerical Prediction of the Spatial and Temporal Characteristics of the Aero-optical Disturbance Produced by a Helicopter in Hover

by Ryan T. Kelly Aero-optical disturbances produced from turbulent compressible flow-fields can seriously degrade the performance of an optical signal. At compressible flight speeds these disturbances stem from the density variations present in turbulent boundary-layers and free-shear layers; however helicopters typically operate at incompressible speeds which nearly eliminates the aberrating e...

Study of Rotor Tip-Clearance Flow Using Large-Eddy Simulation

A large-eddy simulation has been performed to study the temporal and spatial dynamics of a rotor tip-clearance flow, with the objective of determining the underlying mechanisms for low pressure fluctuations downstream of the tip-gap. Simulation results are compared with experimental measurements, and favorable agreements are observed in both qualitative and quantitative sense. Typical vortical ...

Large-eddy simulation of turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubes submerged in an emulated atmospheric boundary-layer

Turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubic obstacles has been numerically investigated using large-eddy simulation. The simulations have been performed using high-performance computations with local cluster systems. The array of cubes are fully submerged in a simulated deep rough-wall atmospheric boundary-layer with high turbulence intensity characteristics of environmental turbulent fl...
